British classic gets a fresh twist: MINI and Sir Paul Smith are joining forces once again, resulting in the new MINI Paul Smith Edition. These two iconic brands, united by a shared language of creativity and tradition, unveiled their collaborative project at the Tokyo premiere, the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (October 29). Rooted deeply in history, yet unmistakably forward-looking, this edition embodies both heritage and innovation.
The partnership between these brands dates back to 1998, when Paul Smith designed a limited edition MINI in his signature blue. In 1999, to celebrate MINI’s 40th anniversary, a one-off car was created, covered in 86 stripes across 26 colours. Today, they’ve gone much further: this edition is available on real Cooper models (3-door, 5-door, and Convertible), including an electric variant, not just as a concept.
The exterior strikes a balance between boldness and restraint. Three paint options are offered — the exclusive Statement Grey (a nod to the 1959 Mini Austin Seven), Inspired White (recalling Classic Mini Beige), and the familiar Midnight Black.
The roof comes in two finishes: classic Jet Black or the special Nottingham Green, paying homage to Paul Smith’s hometown. The designer’s signature “Signature Stripe” is visible across the roof and sides. Eighteen-inch Night Spoke wheels in Dark Steel complement the reimagined black-and-blue MINI badge.
“I use the word ‘irreverence’ quite a lot when I’m styling my shows… In the early days, men dressed very classically… That is why I give the customer the chance to have a little fun with a classic outfit. Now, this playful spirit carries over into the production MINIs.” — Paul Smith
The interior tells its own story. The aluminum door sills bear Paul Smith’s engraved phrase: “Every day is a new beginning”, and the floor mats feature a sketched rabbit, the designer’s lucky charm.
Inside, the cabin blends patterned fabric with stripe motifs, Nightshade Blue seats, contrasting blue stitching, and a sporty steering wheel with the signature stripe — all carefully designed to convey that this is the familiar MINI, now imbued with Paul Smith’s character.
What resonates most is the philosophy of “every day is a new beginning.” This is more than marketing; it’s a mindset realized in every detail of the car: the welcoming “hello” projection on the threshold, hand-finished elements, and meticulous attention to detail throughout.
