New KEF Q Series speakers
KEF is renowned for its high-quality speakers that deliver excellent sound and enhance any space. Now, with the release of the new Q Series speakers, KEF is making its advanced Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) more accessible in terms of price.
MAT is not entirely new for the Q Series. This technology was first introduced in the R Series Metacollection in 2023. At the time, it was unclear if it would reach more affordable models, but that seems to be happening now. The new Q Series with integrated MAT starts at $600 per pair and goes up to $2,200. Although these prices are still an investment, they make high-level sound quality more accessible.
So, what exactly is MAT? MAT, or Metamaterial Absorption Technology, is a maze-like structure inside the speakers that absorbs unwanted frequencies, described by KEF as an “acoustic black hole.” This innovative technology eliminates 99% of sound distortions, resulting in clearer, more natural sound. MAT’s effectiveness has already been proven in the R Series, and its implementation in the Q Series is expected to provide the same high-quality sound experience.
It all sounds a bit abstract, but the results speak for themselves, and KEF received a lot of positive reviews after launching the R Series last year. This is hardly surprising, as KEF has a history of producing high-quality speakers and knows what it’s doing.
The Q Series includes eight models, all equipped with KEF’s 12th-generation Uni-Q driver with integrated MAT for improved performance. Some models, like the Q11 Meta, Q7 Meta, and Q Concerto Meta, have been upgraded to a three-way design for better frequency separation. These speakers use the Uni-Q driver for high and mid-range frequencies, while a new bass driver handles the lower frequencies, delivering a deeper and richer bass.
Additionally, the series includes the Q4 Meta, the first on-wall speaker in the lineup, ideal for creating surround sound without taking up floor space. The Q8 Meta can be placed on top of another speaker to add height channels for Dolby Atmos, reflecting sound off the ceiling for a more immersive audio experience.
Design and Availability
KEF has retained the sleek, premium design of its Q Series. The speakers are available in various colors to suit any interior. However, the release will be staggered. The Q Concerto Meta is available only to myKEF members, while the rest of the Q Series – including the Q11 Meta, Q7 Meta, and others – is already available for everyone. The Q4 Meta and additional accessories are expected to be available later this winter.
